The calculated stepover is also the effective diameter to use when calculating the correct cutting speed of the operation.
This application is useful for estimating the surface finish produced when milling surfaces with a ballnose endmill, or turning with a specific tool nose radius.
The surface finish is shown as microinches or micrometers. This number is theoretically the correct value.
However, no allowance is made for flaws caused by chatter, incorrect cutting tool grades or tool geometry, bad setups, poor machine condition, or any of the other conditions that can affect surface finish.
